How to Price Match to Save Money While Shopping

Dec 22 2014 Parent Category I

Price matching is when a retailer advertises that they will match any lower advertised price from one of their rival stores and will sell you the same item for the lower price. There are actually many retailers out there that are fully committed to providing value to customers by offering products at the ultimate lowest price. While price matching may seem seamless and easy in theory, it can actually be a little more difficult in practice. However, that being said you can save a substantial amount of money if you learn how to successfully price match.

Collect the Flyer

The first step to saving money through price matching is to get your hands on the flyer that notes the model and price number. If you found the item that is cheaper online then simply print out the ad. Ensure that the ad clearly states the model and price of the item, as the model numbers will have to be identical. Also make sure you take into account the shipping costs if applicable. Be aware that competitors will often not price match an item that isnق€™t in stock so look at the quantity in stock of said item.

Review the Price matching Policy

You should be well versed on the price matching policy of the store that you are seeking to receive the match from. Reading through the policy will aid you in determining what documentations youق€™ll need, for instance a printout vs. a flyer. It will also inform you of the rules you need to follow in order to qualify for a price match, for instance some stores will not price match if the competitor has ran out of the item. This will lower the likelihood of running into any surprises that will get in the way of a successful price match.

Prepare and Gather Proof

Spend a sufficient amount of time preparing the right proof in order to ensure that your price match is successful. Although it may be quite tedious to have to collect and take with you all of the information needed, every retailer will vary in the leniency with their customers when it comes to their price match policy. Keep in mind that you canق€™t bring too much information with you, as itق€™s better to be way over prepared than be outright denied due to the fact that you didnق€™t provide enough proof. Print out the companyق€™s price matching policy and bring it to the store, as well as the printout or flyer of the ad that has the cheaper item on it.

Be Prepared For Unfriendly Staff

Be aware that not all managers will take too kindly to having to deal with a price match even if it is their storeق€™s policy to do so. In the case that you run into a difficult staff member then simply make a phone call to the companyق€™s top office in order to get help and clarify your situation. It is recommended that you find the head office number and bring it with you just in case a situation like this arises that you need to deal with.

Getting the Price Successfully Matched

Once you have arrived at the retailer or store that you want a price match for then take a deep breath and approach an employee. Let the employee know that youق€™ve found an item thatق€™s cheaper than the one in this particular store, and that you would like a price match of this competitorق€™s lower price. Ensure that you are extremely polite, as the success of getting a price match often depends on the helpfulness of the employee in order to grant your request. After this, simply present your printout or flyer that has the proof of the lower price. Keep in mind that most retailers reserve the right to validate the flyer and so they may call the competitorق€™s store in order to confirm that the item was in fact selling at a lower price and is in stock. Once this has been confirmed it should be enough for your request for a price match to be granted, and you will simply be asked to pay for the lower priced item.
