The Biggest Mistakes People Make on Their Monthly Bills

Jul 14 2014 Parent Category I

Paying your bills isn't supposed to be difficult, however many people make huge mistakes when it comes to taking care of their monthly bills each month. Making these mistakes can cause huge problems in your finances. Here are the biggest mistakes people make when it comes to paying their monthly bill.

Paying Bills Late

Often times bills are paid late not because a person doesn't have the money to pay it, but because they are disorganized with their finances. Even when you receive the same bill every month, it can be difficult to pay it if you do not have your finances together. However, losing money due to the fact that you forgot to pay your bills is a waste and is easily avoidable. You do not want to be stuck with interest payments and late fees, and so it is a good idea to find a way to ensure that your bills are paid on time.

Not Having Enough Money

It is one thing to not pay your bill because of disorganization, but not paying your bill on time due to the fact that you do not have enough money is also a problem. Many people find that they cannot pay their bill in full because they did not keep all of their receipts and did not balance their checkbook and so do not have enough money at the end of the month to make sure all their financial obligations are met.

Hoping for a Windfall

Spending more money than you can afford to because you are banking on an event to occur is not good form. Whether you are hoping to gain money through a scheme or by gambling, any sort of event that may or may not occur is not a good idea when it comes to having enough money to pay your bills. In fact, you can find yourself in a predicament if you are holding out hope for a great event to occur that will bail you out of your financial obligation.

Living Beyond Your Means

Overspending is one of the biggest mistakes you can make. In this day and age it is all too easy to overspend with credit cards. All you have to do is swipe a plastic card in order to obtain virtually anything you desire. However, at the end of the day you will have a large bill that'll need to be paid. If you find yourself swiping your card too many times for things that you do not need such as restaurant meals and weekend trips then take a step back and consider switching to cash. Dealing with an unaffordable credit card bill is never fun, and can be avoided as long as you do not live beyond your means.

Paying Extra

Although this mistake is definitely better than not paying your credit card bills in full, it is still a mistake. This is due to the fact that you can pay your bills faster by using any extra money that you have at the end of the month for debt that has high interest rates and on the other bills making minimum payments. Once one balance is paid off then you can start making full payments to another, this way you won't be stuck paying a high interest for longer than you need to, as you will get all your high interest bills out of the way.
