Feb 19 2014 Parent Category I

There are always items around that people need, but just how many of them are you wasting your money on? The answer is quite a few of them. When you think about it, there are many directions you can turn on a regular basis to get a little something for free. However, when you are looking to make a significant dent in your monthly spending, you may want to consider some larger items. Here are ten things that can help you do just that.

1. Bottled Water

While bottled water may taste a little better, it is often just as healthy for you as what comes out of your tap. If you happen to live in an older home, you may want to buy a filtration system to put on your sink, but tap water can save you a good chunk of money each month, especially if all eight glasses of water you drink per day come from those bottles.

2. Weight Loss Programs

There are tons of places online that offer free descriptions of how to lose weight. You want to look for one that explains what you eat and why, plus how you should exercise. Your body should have resting times between the strenuous exercises, so make sure you are not required to push yourself hard each and every day. Then, just make sure you have figure out a plan that will work with your lifestyle and get started.

3. Magazines, Newspapers, and Movies

Most people live near a library, and today, most libraries have all of these for patrons to take out for free. You can make a trip to your local library once a week and get an entirely new selection of reading and viewing materials for your entertainment.

4. Cards and Stationary

The internet allows everyone to be able to go through and send free greetings and well-wishes on a regular basis. If you want a personal touch, however, you can also print out your own stationary at home and still create a hand-written note that will be extra-special to the intended recipient.

5. Exercise

This may sound obvious, most people still spend a good amount of money on gym memberships and exercise videos each year. Instead, try renting those videos from the local library, jogging or walking around your neighborhood, or even giving the free gym trial memberships a shot instead of putting your hard-earned money on the line. Save yourself money while losing weight—that’s a great trade!

6. Haircuts

This may be hit or miss, it’s still free. Most upper end salons train their new stylists as students before they are allowed to take over a chair of their own, and while training, these students must cut actual hair to learn the different techniques. If you need your hair cut and aren’t too worried about if your style comes out picture-perfect, this is the ideal solution.

7. Toiletries for Traveling

Instead of going out and buying smaller versions of the items you already use, try asking the manufacturer’s for trial sizes to be sent to you. Most of them will do so quite happily because it gets their name and brand out into more homes. These are often the ideal size for you to put into your luggage when traveling instead of having to pay for those little bottles at the drug store, saving you even more money.

8. Special Birthday Meals

Many restaurants offer a free birthday meal so long as you can show some form of ID that proves it is your birthday. Call around and find which restaurants offer this special, and then plan out your special day. Heck, you might even find some great places to go to for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

9. Credit Report

Every 12 months, annualcreditreport.com offers every consumer a free credit report from one of the three major credit bureaus. Now, if you plan accordingly, you can get one free one sent to you every four months, keeping you regularly apprised of what is on your credit report. Just make sure to look over it carefully when you get it to make sure the information is accurate.

10. Cookbooks

There are numerous websites that offer recipes for free, so why buy a cookbook that is only going to take up space and potentially clutter up your kitchen? You shouldn’t! Take a look at the many websites and figure out which ones offer the styles of cooking you and your family prefer most. From there, bookmark them and use them whenever you need a little culinary inspiration.

While these ten tips can save you a good amount over a year, they may not seem like they do much one at a time. Try giving a few of them a shot for a month and see what you have saved at the end of each month. Maybe doing a few of them one month and seeing your savings will inspire you to give a few more a shot!
