5 Fun Things to Do This Fall on a Budget

Oct 29 2013 Parent Category I

Fall is a very invigorating time of year to most people, as you can easily spend time outside without getting too warm or too cold. There are also many things you can do outdoors in the fall that won’t break your budget. If you have been trying to figure out some fun things you and your family can do this fall, give these five ideas a try. You are sure to have a lot of fun without spending a fortune.

Visit an Apple Farm

Picking apples at an apple farm can be a fun family event. You can make the experience educational by teaching kids about how the apples grow and how to tell the difference between the different kinds of apples all around the farm. Whatever you end up picking you can then bring home and make food with, such as homemade applesauce, apple crisp, or even an apple cake. The complete experience, including the baking in the end, is great for the entire family.

Go Pumpkin Picking

If you and your family don’t like apples, perhaps you should consider pumpkins instead. You can take the kids out, let them pick out the pumpkin they want to carve for Halloween, and bring it home. This allows you to buy a pumpkin at a reasonable price that is exactly what you want for your home. Once you get home, you can then work with the kids to design the perfect Jack-o-lantern. Depending on the ages of your kids, you can then carve up the pumpkin or let them have a crack at it. After you are all done, you can light up the pumpkin and enjoy the experience every day until Halloween arrives.

Plant Spring Bulbs

One of the fun ideas you can do on even a very strict budget is to plant flowers for the spring. This means preparing the ground and putting bulbs deep enough where harsh winter cold won’t cause harm. Then, all of the effort you put in now can be enjoyed with the colorful sprigs that pop up during early spring. You will get to enjoy spending time outdoors during the fall, and you will get to enjoy it again once your yard stands apart from that of your neighbors in the springtime.

Have a Bon Fire

One fun activity that people are starting to take advantage of is having a fall bon fire. This is an activity that is fun for the entire family, so long as the young ones are watched carefully. You don’t have to worry about mosquitoes if you plan it after a frost, and you can stay warm while enjoying the night sky. You can have toasted marshmallows or S’mores, and tell fun stories that the whole family can enjoy.

Go Camping

Before it gets freezing cold outside, you may want to consider taking the family on a camping trip. The temperature allows you to be comfortable at night, while snuggled under a sleeping bag. Plus you can also go hiking or biking during the day and enjoy the scenery without the sun baking you from the heat.

Fall is a great time to spend time outdoors, and there are many activities you can do that won’t disrupt the budget you and your family are living with. The more time you are able to spend outside, the more of fall’s colors and fresh smells you will be able to enjoy. Fall has a lot to offer, so take advantage of the season and see how much special time you can create for your family with little or no expense required.
